One More Day                       Sinead O'Connor

From the soundtrack album: Veronica Guerin

My love, more dear than this life you are to me
Your kiss more clear than the crystal of the sea
Please save me, I've fallen here
I'm lost and alone

An angel weeps
I hear him cry
A lonely prayer
A voice on high

Dry all your tears
Come what may
And in the end the sun will rise
On one more day
Hey

(extract of gaelic verse)
Gile mo chroí do Chroí-se, a Shlánathóir,
Is ciste mo chroí do Chroí-se d'fháil im chomhair,
Ós follas gur líon do Chroí dem ghrá-sa, a Stóir.....

Dry all your tears
Come what may
And in the end the sun will rise
On one more day
Hey

The sun will rise on one more day

I was surprised to stumble upon an Elvish translation for this beautiful song!   I could find no credit for the translator, only the writers of the original piece:   "One More Day" Written by Harry Gregson-Williams, Hugh Marsh, Patrick Cassidy and Trevor Horn.   The elvish version, which I have included below, actually contains the song's full lyrics in English, unlike the gaelic section above - from which there appear to be a couple of lines missing.

One More Day ~ Elvish version

My love, more dear than this life you are to me.
Melindonya, melda lá sina cuilë elyë nin.
Your kiss, more clear than the crystal of the sea.
Miquiliselya, poica lá i silima ëaro.
Please save me, I've fallen here.
Iquista etelehtanyë, alantienyë sínomë.
I'm lost and alone.
Ni vanwa ar eressëa.

An angel weeps, I hear him cry.
Valandil nyenyë, hláranyes nyéra.
A lonely prayer, a voice on high.
Eressëa cyermë, óma meneldëa.
Dry all your tears, come what may,
Á hauta ilyë nírilya, aima tulë,
And in the end the sun will rise on one more day.
Ar mettassë Anar ortuva vinya aurenna.

The years go by and we reap what we have sown.
I loar autar ar cerilvë ya rendelvë.
Our children now they have children of their own.
Hínilva sí utúvientë híni enten.
And though they are far away
Ananta entë vahaia
We will sing once more.
Liruvalvë ata.

Notes: I discovered this song only recently.   Although we have several Sinead O'Connor CDs in our collection, 'One More Day' is only available on the soundtrack album to the film 'Veronica Guerin' ~ which coincidentally stars Cate Blanchett in the title role.   I love how Sinead's voice is both tender and fierce, investing a raw emotion into the words she sings.

For me the lyrics speak of Sam's feelings as he witnesses Frodo's deterioration, pondering on what his master means to him.    Perhaps he is speaking to a tormented Frodo as he holds on to the hope that a new and brighter day will come, when all will be well.   'Is everything sad going to come untrue?'
